AUTUMN EQUINOX

As the Fall Equinox approaches on September 22nd, it’s a good time to remember the bounty of experiences, achievements and provisions we’ve acquired over the year.  Between the last few heat waves of summer in the forecast, the cool winds of fall will be bringing forth a change in season and perhaps a few transitions of the soul. Maintaining balance during these states of flux requires steadfast determination, flexibility and ultimately inner peace. Three stones to assist during times of transition are Carnelian, Botswana Agate and Black Tourmaline
in Quartz.

Carnelian helps spark the initiative to follow through on commitments and harness the courage to face obstacles. Carnelian is a stone of ambition and determination.

Botswana Agate is a stone of positive change and harmonious thinking; it’s a powerful stone that helps the user see the big picture. It has a calming ripple effect on the mind and heart; reminding us to be gentle with ourselves in states of change by surrendering to the flow and trusting our intuition. Comforting and creative, Botswana Agate helps us venture into the unknown with poise and flexibility so that we feel prepared for anything the future may hold.

Black Tourmaline in Quartz is purifying and protective. The fusion of light and dark is grounding while balancing opposite energies, so that one may feel centered and at peace within. It has the power to transform negative energy into a positive, uplifting force that strengthens and harmonizes all of the chakras and meridians. By balancing Yin and Yang energies, Black Tourmaline in Quartz serves as a stone of unity and integration making it an ideal aid for moving forward with clarity, stability and temperance.

                 Prep Time 15 minutes
·                Total Time 45 minutes
·                Yield Serves 12

 Ingredients

·         3 tablespoons butter
·         1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
·         2 garlic cloves, sliced
·         1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
·         1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
·         1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper plus more for garnish (optional)
·         Coarse salt
·         1 large butternut squash (about 4 pounds), peeled, seeded, and cut into 1-inch
cubes  (Trader Joes has bags of cubed squash)
·         1 can (14 1/2 ounces) reduced-sodium chicken broth
·         1 cup half-and-half
·         1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
          Sour cream, for serving
Directions

1.  In a large saucepan, heat butter over medium. Add onion, garlic, thyme, cinnamon, and cayenne. Season with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened, 5 to 7 minutes.
2.  Add squash, broth, half-and-half, and 3 cups water. Bring to a boil; reduce to a simmer, and cook until squash is tender, about 20 minutes.
3.  Working in batches, puree in a blender until smooth. Stir in lemon juice; season with salt. Serve bisque with sour cream, garnished with cayenne, if desired.

For a different flavor, use ground nutmeg or cloves instead of cinnamon, or add a Southwestern touch with a small amount of chili powder.

Autumn is Approaching

Autumn is approaching & I am already seeing the shift in energy. Autumn belongs to the element “Metal”, which relates to the Lungs.

Through inhalation, the Lung is the organ of “first contact” with the exterior. It is the commander of wei qi, located directly under the skin. When the lungs are attacked by external influences, the wei qi is weakened allowing pathogens to enter the body ~ symptoms include allergies, asthma, eczema, frequent colds and sinus infections.

Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Screen) helps to boost immunity and is a wonderful allergy formula because it strengthens the wei qi.
